What is GlycoGuard?

GlycoGuard is a direct-fed microbial probiotic that may be especially effective in promoting gut health in nursing foals. The formula is comprised of an activated preparation of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis and Lactobacillus plantarum.

I thought bacteria were bad. Why would I feed bacteria to my foal?

Actually, not all bacteria are bad. There are thousands of distinct species of bacteria, protozoa, yeasts, and fungi in the equine gastrointestinal tract and the majority of these are beneficial. They exist in a symbiotic relationship with the horse, helping it to maximize the extraction and absorption of nutrients from its food.

How does GlycoGuard help maintain digestive health?

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis (B. infantis) is unique among gut bacteria in its immense capacity to digest and consume complex oligosaccharides like those found in equine milk.

B. infantis and L. plantarum are believed to work together in a three-part action:

1. Consume complex carbohydrates found in equine milk

2. Produce short chain fatty acids which help provide extra energy for the foal

3. Support a healthy gut epithelium, the layer of cells that form the surface lining of the small and large intestine in the gastrointestinal tract

When should GlycoGuard be fed to a nursing foal?

The foal should be fed 10cc orally at birth and every 12 hours for the first four days (8 feedings total).

Is GlycoGuard a drug or medicine?

No, GlycoGuard is a direct-fed microbial feed product that supports a healthy microbiome – it is not a drug or medicine.

What form does GlycoGuard come in?

GlycoGuard is available in an oral gel formulation in an 80-gram syringe.

When should GlycoGuard be administered?

GlycoGuard should be administered at birth or the first sign of intestinal upset.

How often should GlycoGuard be administered?

One serving (10cc) of GlycoGuard should be fed twice a day for four consecutive days.

Are there special instructions on how to administer GlycoGuard?

Turn the dial on the syringe to the appropriate marking. Insert the syringe into the mouth and depress plunger until it stops.

My foal is on antibiotics, should I administer GlycoGuard simultaneously?

Yes, keep supplementing GlycoGuard during and after the course of antibiotics.

Can I give GlycoGuard to an adult horse?

GlycoGuard works with the mare’s milk and works best in nursing foals.

Why does GlycoGuard need to be kept in the refrigerator?

The active ingredients in GlycoGuard are live, activated bacteria. The product should be kept refrigerated to ensure the appropriate quantity of bacteria in each serving.

What are the side effects of GlycoGuard?

There are no known side effects. Our scientists have studied these organisms extensively. Also, these organisms are on the Association of American Feed Control Officials approved a list of direct-fed microbials.

Should I administer GlycoGuard to a severely ill or immunocompromised foal?

If your foal is critically ill or immune compromised, ask a veterinary professional before using GlycoGuard.
